People Watch
I had the opportunity to observe and derive several things from two certain characters.
They were helpers in a charity organization. They were to sell ballpoint pens at 2 dollars each.
I began to watch as they approached the streams of people at the City Link underpass at City Hall Mrt station.
Lets just identify the ladies by, A and B. Lady A was 15 meters away from lady b. However, i began to observe that the response they give to the people who either accept or reject them is very different.
Lady A forces her way and pushes for the sale of the pen, she either shoves her charity license or just lifts the pen into your face. Very rude of her. This got her no sales at all. Fact, all i saw was that her hand was full of the pens, and never got lesser. Worse still, she began to curse and swear in Hokkien after she got impatient. I overheard that she was very fed up, she had to look after her ill mother and still had to put up with the !@#$ that the !@#$-poreans gave to her. So much for a kind hearted charity yeah, no thanks aunty, i would love to help the kids, if you had helped yourself.
What did Lady B do? She was kindly approaching everyone, just as lady A did. She, however, could take the crap and in fact, she did get more sales. She even got scolded by lady A and did not get affected by it. All she did was to take it in, and call her superior.
Lady B was definitely the smarter person in the situation.
One more observation I made was when I was sitting in a cafe. I was with a friend of mine. And she is a young, attractive girl, not to my liking but i cannot deny her beauty. I was having a nice chat with her when i realized that she was the main staring target of the many ogling men in the busy crowd. What I realized was that this innocent young girl, whom was very bright and very beauty, became a mass display of typical “man-ness”, epitified by the sexist gestures that woman are objects of desire, not ones to love, to cherish and to appreciate. I was applauded at the look of one man. He had his jaw dropped, eyes not blinking and his sweat was about to give him a nice shower. Awful as it may sound, yes, it did happen. I decided to return him with a cold stare and pressured him to back off. Not very nice of me, but it’s only the right thing to do.
Observe observe, i’ve observed the different perspectives and attitudes between two ladies and the astonishing fact that men do stare, and stare almost all the time. Peace!
